Jill Scott was born on April 4 1972 at Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Being a single girl, she was raised also through her maternal grandparents. Scott was a graduate of the Philadelphia High School for Girls. She then enrolled at Temple University. Scott studied secondary school education as well as working two different job. Her goal was to be an high school English teacher. This dream was however put on hold when after 3 years of studying and working as an assistant to teachers she dropped out of the college. She began her career as a spoken-word artist and performing live at poetry readings. Her next collaboration was to Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. They wrote You Got Me together. At the Roots performance, she announced her artist status. Then she secured collaborations including with Eric Benet Will Smith, and Common. She was also able to gain knowledge of the stage when she was a part of the Canada tour of Broadway production Rent. She was signed to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
